How to Make Easy Apple Ugly Biscuits in Your Air Fryer

What is an apple ugly? It's usually a thick, soft, fluffy piece of dough with apples that's fried like a donut and then glazed with sugar. The recipe for Apple Ugly Biscuits I'm posting doesn't involve frying, but yields tasty little biscuits with the same flavors as apple ugglies. The biscuit recipe is about as simple as you can get for biscuits. The apple ugly biscuits take minutes to mix up and air fry in 10-15 minutes. The biscuits are a little crispy on the outsides, soft in the centers, filled with little juicy bits of apple, and smell of cinnamon and vanilla. Raisins (or dried cranberries) provide extra sweetness and texture to the biscuits. The biscuits do have a glaze, which also is simple. I use a touch of rum extract in the glaze for extra flavor. You can also leave the glaze off and eat the biscuits "as is." The biscuits are a sweet treat and are great for breakfast, alongside a cup of tea or coffee for a snack, or for a simple dessert. Enjoy!

Air Fryer Apple Ugly Biscuits -- Makes 8-9

1 cup of half and half

1/3 cup of sugar

1 teaspoon of vanilla

2 cups of self-rising flour

1 teaspoon of cinnamon

1 small apple, peeled and chopped (about 1/2 cup)

1/4 cup of raisins or dried cranberries

Sugar and cinnamon to sprinkle

A little milk to drizzle

Glaze

In a medium bowl or measure whisk together well the half and half, sugar, and vanilla. Stir in the self-rising flour and cinnamon until just combined. Stir in the apple and raisins. Cut small pieces of baking parchment to fit your air fryer basket. Drop scant 1/4 cup portions of dough onto the parchment, spacing the dough mounds at least an inch and a half apart. With damp hands neaten up the dough mounds into rounds about an inch thick. Sprinkle the tops of the dough mounds with a little cinnamon and sugar and dribble on a little milk (about 1/2 teaspoon per dough mound). Put one dough-topped piece of parchment in your air fryer basket, put the basket in the air fryer, and air fry the dough at 350 degrees for 10-15 minutes until golden brown. Remove the biscuits from the air fryer and repeat the cooking process with the remaining dough. Glaze the biscuits while they are still warm or just eat them "as is" with no glaze.

Glaze

3/4 cup of confectioner's sugar

1 tablespoon of milk

1/2 teaspoon of vanilla

1/4 teaspoon of rum extract

Combine the glaze ingredients in a cup and microwave them for 30 seconds. Stir them well until the mixture is smooth. If necessary microwave the mixture again for 15 seconds and stir it again. Drizzle the hot glaze over the warm buns.
